Never plant a rose on its own. Roses get what we call bare bottoms in the trade. They flower at their tips, so the lower branches end up bare and uninteresting. What you want is something spilling and frothing around the base to cover them up. Honestly, I would plant almost anything with roses. Hardy geraniums. Nepeta. Late summer perennials like helenium or asters. Clump-forming sedums at the front for ground cover. Even ferns. I have just planted up a little shade garden where the roses and the ferns both get enough light to suit them. There is a bonus to all that planting too. It traps a little moisture around the rose roots, which they like. My personal top three: nepeta for that soft froth at the front of the border, self-seeded hollyhocks for a quintessential country feel, and pheasant grass for the pinks and oranges together. Roses are thuggish, mind you. But give them the right company and they are absolutely stunning. My only rule is not to plant them in isolation. Plants need community.
